The New Prez Ride

Okay, had to share this one… Photos of the new Presidential ride are officially ‘out’. I’ve taken this article directly from AOL, so if you want to see the photos, you’ll need to go here.

Photos of New Presidential Limo Leaked

WASHINGTON (Jan. 6) – As a candidate, Barack Obama promoted hybrid cars. As president, he’ll be handed the keys to one. Sort of. Shortly after taking the oath of office, Obama will climb into the Mother of All Hybrids — part car, part truck and, from the looks of it, part tank.

In keeping with recent tradition, the Secret Service will place a brand-new presidential limousine into service January 20 to drive the new president on the 2-mile jaunt down Pennsylvania Avenue during the inaugural parade.

Already, spy photos of the limo — with patches of gray primer — have leaked out. And already, the reviews:

“Ugly as sin,” says one car enthusiast on an auto Web site. “Can’t we make a hotter ride for our prez?”

“Sheesh,” says another, “why don’t they just transport the president around in an Abrams tank.”

One news agency, noting its 8-inch-thick doors, says the limo can withstand a “direct hit from an asteroid.” But GM spokeswoman Joanne K. Krell laughed off the comments. “And it will fix you a latte if you ask,” she jokes. In truth, the new presidential limo is a Cadillac, Krell said, although it is “not a direct extension of any single model.”

“The presidential vehicle is built to precise and special specifications, undergoes extreme testing and development, and also incorporates many of the top aspects of Cadillac’s ‘regular’ cars — such as signature design, hand-cut-and-sewn interiors, etc.,” Krell told CNN.

“Cadillac is honored to serve and renew this great tradition,” she said. “And it is entirely appropriate that an American president has at his service a great American vehicle.”

For much of the country’s history, the Secret Service didn’t even drive the president, evidently oblivious to the dangers of asteroids.

In the post-Lincoln horse-and-buggy era, it was customary for a security detail to closely trail the president, according to a Secret Service history.

Tampa Bay Auto Show

8 11 2008

Okay, so as a part of a photo project I’m working on, I headed over to the Auto Show at the Tampa convention center. I must say, with a few exceptions, I’m pretty disappointed with the cars on display.

What had been touted as a great display of beautifully restored cars turned out to have about 6 of them in total. And they weren’t even a part of the main displays… Pretty disappointing, I must say. A lot of the cars look alike and aren’t all that difference in price, colors, looks, and performance. Hmmm. Sounds like a lot of computers these days…. Except for the few that truly set themselves apart.

I’m not a new Ford fan. If it’s a Ford made after about 1970, I’m not usually going to like it. I actually like the new concept car that was on display, the Ford Airstream, despite the fact that it looks like something out of a Nintendo or Atari game. What I don’t understand, is how is it NOT a copyright infringement?

This one’s for you Richard – it’s time to trade in your Titan for the Airstream. That way you can have a Ford Airstream pulling your Airstream Safari! 🙂 Sorry – had to get that one in. But the front looks a lot like the Airstreams, so you can imagine the comments.

The Lamborghini cars were pretty awesome this year too. They’ve updated a classic design and re-designed another. Needless to say, these cars speak for themselves.

Another beautifully restored car was the Czech Tatra. There’s a lot of history behind these cars, but I’m going to save that for another day. So for now, enjoy the pictures!

One of the concept cars that I really looked forward to seeing was the new Chevy Camaro (2010). Beautiful car, decent specs, and overall, it reminds me of my favorite animal, the Great White shark. C’mon, you can’t tell me this doesn’t look like the shark….

And of course, my favorite for last. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Hmmm…. Can Anyone Say Roadkill?

I saw an interesting slideshow today. It’s about a new car that’s about the size of a Mini Cooper, but I’m not sure. It’s called the Tata Nano. A four-seater car that is being debuted in India. The makers are hoping to revolutionize the way Indians drive. You can read more about it here.

I also recently saw some very graphic photos of a rather nasty car crash on one of the local interstates, where a Scion and a semi-tractor-trailer went head to head. Now, given the fact that just about no one will survive that, I was completely shocked by the photos (A friend who works for the fire department sent them to me…). I’m not about to post those here, but contact me directly if you really want to see them. Not PG-13 even. One of the photos depicted the victim in several pieces. No, I’m not kidding. Not a safe car by any standards. The front was accordion-smushed past the trunk.

Anyways, just a quick note. I found these new cars interesting. Not that I’d buy one. I’m doing pretty well with my Camry thank you very much. (Although I do miss my SUV)

Public Safety Message

21 12 2007

Okay people – be careful out there!  I made the mistake of running a few errands today (non-Xmas related), and nearly got in about 10 accidents!!  Yep – that’s a high number.  Please people, drive carefully and slow down!  There are a lot of people that are talking more on their cell phones and not paying as much attention.  For some reason, they have a tendency to walk right out in front of cars….  Hmmm.  I wonder why that is?  (and people wonder why I think the world would be a better place without them….)  So please be careful this holiday season and have a wonderful Merry Christmas!
