Interesting Photo

Last night I had loads of heat lightning tearing across the sky, so I decided to get out my camera and try to get some shots. Only got one due to the light pollution of the street lamps. I’m going to head to the beach this week to try again. My area is supposed to be getting some more thunderstorms later this week, so I should have a pretty good shot.

That failing, I had some fun in the backyard. I took one shot that I’ve had several people rave about already this morning, so I decided that I should post it. Let me know what you think!

My Haven

There and Back Again…..

27 08 2007

Well, sorry to disappoint ya’ll, but I took the weekend off from the computer.  And let me tell you – IT WAS GREAT!!!  No technology whatsoever!  No MP3 player, no dishwasher/dryer/washer and I cooked out over a real firepit with my cast iron cookware.  While some people may faint at the idea of living without technology, let me tell you, it really isn’t as bad as it sounds.  Anybody see Jericho this past season?  I don’t usually watch tv (no time to…), but I’ve kind of/sort of kept up with the storyline.  Anyways, for those of you who don’t know the storyline, America gets attacked from traitors on the inside, using the Bin Laden (or some other terrorist) group for cover.  All their electronics go out from an EMP.  Let me tell you – this country is so dependent on technology, that IF that should ever happen to this wonderful country – we’d really be in a great big pile of cow patties.  Look what happened to the businesses that made their headquarters in one of the World Trade towers.  Many went out of business, not due to the towers disintegrating, but because these MAJOR companies had no backup.  No paper copies offsite for recordkeeping.

No, I’m not trying to advertise that this should happen.  I’m just saying that we need to take a few precautions.  We rely too much on technology that we don’t know how the actual process happens anymore.  For example.  I was in an Accounting class at the local college this past spring semester.  Not one person in that room could do long division without a calculator.  Pretty sad.  For that matter, most didn’t know how to work an accounting calculator, much less a hand-held version.

People, think about it.  We need to find some way of backing up our files, even if it means paper versions.  I live in Tampa Bay, Florida, the lightning capital of the world.  I’ve lost many files due to electromagnetic interference from the static that lightning can cause.  Not to mention a few lightning strikes as well.  So heed my word.  Back up, often and in multiple locations and formats…..

Yup, you guessed it….

It’s that wonderful time of year again! When it’s almost time to stop wearing white! Ha ha – you thought today’s post was going to be about something serious! I hear all of my friends complain about how their wives refuse to wear white after Labor Day. So funny. Just to annoy the fashion world, let’s all keep wearing white until spring, then start wearing dark colors. 🙂 I’m sitting at a local coffee shop (NOT Upchucks), listening to a gaggle of women complain about how they have no clothes in their closet that are appropriate for winter. Hello! This is Florida! There is no dress requirement, except that all clothes must be lightweight, and colorful! Shorts, sandals and Hawaiian shirts are the norm here! You don’t need to spend oodles of dollars getting winter coats here for the 3 days of winter we have. It’s not like the weather really goes below 50 here. Heck, I still wear shorts in that wonderful 50 degree weather! I have a fireplace in my home, and I only get to use it about 3 or 4 days a year. Of course, I’m about to catch hell from some of you for what I’m about to say. On Christmas Day, I turn the air conditioning wayyy down and light the fireplace for a couple of hours. I know – it’s not energy efficient, but it’s only one day a year! I always wanted a white Christmas, at least once in my life, but I’m beginning to doubt that will ever happen. I was born in Florida, I have lived my whole life in Florida and I’ll probably die here. Too bad. I’ve been to other places that I like a whole lot more. Maybe some day…. (There is a little place in Arizona that I would LOVE to move to…)

Today’s Completely Useless Tidbit!

“Stewardesses” is the longest word typed with only the left hand and
“lollipop” with your right.

(Bet you tried this out mentally, didn’t you?)

(Sniff, sniff, tearing up….)

21 08 2007

Well, both of my kids started school today.  1st and 2nd grade.  (Sniff, sniff, tearing up-NOT!)  WHOO-HOO!!!  It was great seeing all the parents at the school high-fiveing each other as their kids disappeared into their classrooms.  Summer is over and so is all the whining about “I’m bored!”.  YES!  Just for fun I stopped by the kindergarten wing and watched as all these sappy mothers stood there with cameras flashing, getting tears all over their too-hard-for-me-to-work-fully digital SLR’s and generally being overly emotional.  Talk about babying their kids – I think the umbilical cord was still attached to a few of them.  Sorry folks, but all I could do was stand there and laugh.  These moms have no clue of what they’re going to go through!  They think it’s cute now, but I guarantee that in 2 weeks they’ll be sick of the routine.  And to think.  They have 13 more years of this!   🙂

I will say that I’m happy that my two kids are excited to be back at school.  They both like their teachers (so far….), and I consider that a good thing.  No child is going to learn as much if they don’t like their teachers.  Maybe they don’t like the subject, but if the teacher is good and the kid likes them, then anything is possible.  Hey, I got through Calc okay, so it looks like there’s hope yet!

Whoo-Hoo!  Yesterday I bought a new computer.  No, not just any computer, but a MAC!!!!  Yay!  I am so excited.  The only Mac that I have is an old Lisa II from like 1978.  But it still works and is going strong!  I still use it for database construction.  Okay, so it’s not much good for anything else.  But I have one and it still works and it doesn’t crash like all my windows-based computers!!!  Pictures to follow!

Rambling Thoughts

14 08 2007

Okay, just a few thoughts here as I haven’t posted much lately.

Well, just for a quick catch-up, I no longer am with my summer job.  I took this job on only temporarily as the printing business is so slow.  So I took on a summer job, and boy, did it SUCK!!!!!  I worked for this real (*&#@%&) jerk that basically wanted me to do 4 different jobs at the same time.  Yeah, right.  Maybe if he actually paid well.  I think he would have paid minimum wage if he could have gotten away with it.  I mean, this guy was such a tightwad that he didn’t want to buy a $1 calculator for my desk, or a $2 pair of scissors, and he expected me to use my car and some of my time commuting to these seminars that he was producing on my dime.  I DON’T THINK SO!  Auto mileage is a reasonable reimbursement for company business.  I put on almost 100 miles on my car for 4 seminars.  What a croc!

Okay, enough rant.   On to something so much more exciting.  Sunday I went to Vertical Ventures in Tampa.  In case you can’t figure out the name and what they do, they’re a rock climbing gym.  KICK ASS!!  Okay, not quite as exciting as real rocks, but almost as much fun.  I went again today and spent about 2 hours trying to get a particuarly hard part.  Haven’t gotten it yet, but I will – I’m just that stubborn!  If you’re in the Bay Area – GO THERE!!!  It is completely worth it!  I just picked up a nice pair of Five Ten shoes at Bill Jackson’s in Pinellas Park.  Turns out that they’re clearing out all their climbing stuff.  Why?  Because there’s no place to climb around here!!!  Well, except for Vertical Ventures…..  I’ll take some photos next time I’m over there and post them.  Now my only question is whether or not to get the annual membership…….
